Bitter Tea is the latest installment from the Brooklyn based The Fiery Furnaces. The multi-instrumental brother and sister duo continue with their eclectic backdrop of experimental yet undeniably catchy melodies that set the stage perfectly for Eleanor's distinct vocals. Fat Possum. 2006.Reviews:
The Fiery Furnaces dont make it easy to like them. In fact, whats most fascinating about the work of Eleanor and Matthew Friedbergerand seriously, sometimes listening to them can be workis that they leave you wondering if theyre being purposely difficult or if theyre simply such thorough oddballs they cant behave otherwise. But those whove been scared off by the bands recent experimental efforts (and again, we dont use "efforts" lightly) might be consoled slightly by Bitter Tea, their first album on Fat Possum. No, they dont really belong on that indie blues label, but, really, where do their extended synthy meanders belong? As always, theyve about a dozen times as many tunes as they have tracks, the lyrics twist the most basic narratives into impenetrable knots, and Eleanors slightly prim voice is the calmative force that stabilizes the whole mess. Honest, we think theyre trying to make us like them here..
