Reviews:

There are countless reactions you might have to the story director Sean Penn tells here'"horror, disgust, admiration, astonishment'"and that's why Into the Wild is such an effective film. In the early '90s, Emory graduate Christopher McCandless gave his life savings to charity, abandoned his car and disappeared into the Alaskan wilderness. It's no spoiler to reveal that his body was found after four months in an abandoned bus; this one is all about the journey, not the destination. Was McCandless a selfish brat who disowned family and friends to pursue an unrealistic dream, or a true individual, literally forging his own path and snubbing his nose at materialism? Although Penn clearly subscribes to the latter perspective, he refreshingly exhibits many facets of McCandless (ably played by up-and-comer Emile Hirsch) through his surreal odyssey. Disagree? Well, even the most cynical viewer should be swayed by earnest supporting turns from Catherine Keener and Vince Vaughn.
