Reviews:

Never disregard the value of a kickass trailer. Hancock’s told us everything we needed to know about its unique take on superhero mythology: Will Smith’s eponymous protagonist can do just about anything, but is a crude, mean-spirited drunk, hence reviled by a public that should embrace him. (Imagine Billy Bob Thornton in this role.) What the trailer didn’t tell you was the Shyamalan-sized twist in the final half-hour that transformed the movie from mindless popcorn fare to introspective melodrama. And we won’t either. But we will heap praise on Jason "Please Make an Arrested Development Movie" Bateman as Hancock’s do-gooder agent, Charlize Theron as his skeptical wife and director Peter Berg, who after an early misstep with Very Bad Things has worked overtime to subvert action stereotypes with The Rundown and now this. As for the always-likeable Big Will, Hancock is only the latest in his string of Fourth of July triumphs.
