Maybe you didn’t catch this, but when the WGA strike ended two days before Valentine’s Day this year, part of the settlement mandated that any actor who had a minimum two-line speaking role in any Judd Apatow television series must get a three-picture deal. Just kidding. But seriously—the Apatow universe has expanded well past critical mass. Luckily, our tolerance has followed suit. We loved Jason Segel in Freaks & Geeks (30-piece drumkit!) Undeclared (face stitched onto girlfriend’s pillow!) and How I Met Your Mother (not as good as Freaks or Undeclared, but tolerable!) His introductory nude scene here is just the tip of the comedy iceberg (so to speak). His script for Sarah Marshall sounds like familiar rom-com grist on paper—boy falls for TV starlet, boy loses TV starlet to pompous rock star, boy tries to win TV starlet back at Hawaii resort—but is infused with enough self-deprecation and toilet humor to win over the boyfriends who got dragged to the theater.
