In May 2002, Disney pulled the plug on Mammoth Records just weeks before the June 25th release date of John Wesley Harding's The Man with No Shadow. No more than 300 hundred journalists received advance CDs of Harding's new record, while only a handful of radio stations received the single "Negative Love'. No other physical copies existed. Over the years those advance CDs have fetched untold hundreds of dollars from an eager fan base in search of Wes' great 'lost" album. Though many - but not all - of the songs ended up on 2004's Adam's Apple (DRT Records), which All Music Guide called 'the finest album of his career', those that did make the cut were in a jumbled running order. The album has never previously been released on vinyl. The Man With No Shadow First Edition restores the album to Wes's original vision. The audio has been remastered from the original tapes, and the package includes cover art from the original sessions and extensive liner notes. The CD package includes the original album plus a bonus unheard band demos and studio outtakes, all previously unreleased.

NC folk rockers Hiss Golden Messenger re-record two of their original songs, "Cat's Eye Blue" (from their critically acclaimed 2019 album Terms of Surrender) "Standing in the Doorway"  (a 2017 digital-only single) at Spacebomb Studios in Richmond VA, with contributions from their in-house orchestra. The latest in the Alive at Spacebomb Studios series.

Originally released in 1996, June of 44’s second album is a long nautical mile from their debut, 1995’s Engine Takes To The Water. Recorded at Chicago Recording Studio and Idful Recording and produced by Bob Weston (Shellac, Mission of Burma), Tropics and Meridians is a collection of rhythmic phrases meant to be perfumed of whatever the listener would like them to be. The music veers from the subtly lilting and melodic to the fierce and abrasive, often with the space of a few bars. Rollicking on the high seas, but then slowing down to float on a glass-like waterbed, the band bring us their unique brand of the quiet storm, set to music of course.

Out of print since 2006, this RSD 2020 exclusive is pressed on glacial blue vinyl and limited to 2000 copies worldwide.

Paris was the first city to really get behind my career as a solo artist. From the first time I played there in 2014 ‘til now, it's always had an extra spark of magic to it. It's always the stop I look forward to the most on my European tours as the audience comes with a very unique and kinetic energy, and because of this, so does the band. I had wanted to document this reciprocating fever between us and the crowd for some time now and saw our sold out show at the beautiful Cabaret Sauvage as the perfect time to do so. I also knew I needed to document a night with my new band, the OH MY GOD Band, which is made up of some of the most talented and tasteful musicians on the planet. In November 1984, Paul Bellini rented a beatbox and started jamming in his basement with guitarist Rob Rowatt, bass player Gord Disley, and fellow York University alumni Scott Thompson. Their early recording sessions produced dozens of experimental songs with challenging lyrics and Mouth Congress was born.

Two years later, The Kids in the Hall’s Bruce McCulloch asked Mouth Congress to open for him at the Rivoli – a club where The Kids in the Hall performed regularly. Utilizing Brian Hiltz’s existing band I Want, they performed a memorable set and several months later decided to record a 7-song cassette entitled For People Only. The sessions occurred just five days before Thompson moved to New York City to begin writing the first season of The Kids in the Hall.

The band never got around to releasing the cassette in any official manner, but now, 32 years later, 3 tracks from For People Only are being made available for the first time by Captured Tracks. “Tactile”, Mouth Congress’s signature tune, is an ode to the sense of touch and a reminder that human contact is still our greatest pleasure. “Gonna Be A Man” is a love/hate song about masculinity.

This was the sole statement accompanying the release of Marvin Pontiac: The Asylum Tapes, the first release in 17 years by John Lurie's alter ego Marvin Pontiac. Coming to prominence during the no wave era as part of NYC's notorious Lounge Lizards and starring in Jim Jarmusch's film Down By Law, Lurie's quirky compositions under the Pontiac pseudonym have developed a legendary reputation among fans and critics alike. Though Asylum Tapes was initially shared with the world in 2017, Northern Spy is proud to bring it to the vinyl medium for the first time in 2020.
